Reach new heights in 2020!

If you’ve been looking for a new sport to challenge yourself in both body and mind, climbing is the perfect choice.

Climbing has a rich history at the University of Leeds which was in fact the birthplace of the indoor climbing wall!

At the Edge we’re offering a collection of fantastic sessions to help you learn the ropes and ascend ever higher.

For more information on our superb range of climbing sessions and facilities, please visit our climbing webpage.

You can gain both free entrance to our climbing facility and discounted rates on our climbing courses by signing up for any Edge membership.

And then why not take to the great outdoors by signing up to a Get Out, Get Active (GOGA) outdoor climbing trip and put your new found skills to the test.

  • GOGA offers indoor and outdoor climbing sessions which are appropriate for both entry level beginners and experienced climbers.
  • Outdoor sessions take place at the beautiful destination of Almscliff Crag and include both bouldering and climbing with ropes.
  • No long term commitment is required, you can attend as many or as few sessions as you’d like.

For more information on our Get Our Get Active programme visit the Get Out, Get Active (GOGA) webpage.

Please note, you must pass a belay test before you can be granted access to our climbing facilities.

Refresher sessions are available for those who have not climbed in a long time.

Your virtual journey begins: Les Mills RPM

Introducing all new Les Mills RPM indoor cycling classes at The Edge.

RPM is a group indoor cycling workout where you control the intensity. This means you can exercise at a leisurely pace or challenge yourself all to the most pedal-worthy playlists and embark on a fitness journey without ever leaving the studio.

Ride to the rhythm of powerful music, improve your personal performance and boost your cardio fitness at an intensity level that works for you!

The RPM workout is based on the science of Cardio Peak Training, which involves maintaining your heart rate at an aerobic training base with interspersed peaks of intensity. This specific blend of steady-state and high-intensity builds cardio endurance and also drives the transformative fat-burning effects associated with high-intensity interval training.

Researchers believe that the varying levels of intensity in an RPM workout are key to maximizing muscle adaptions and producing comprehensive health benefits. Studies have shown that attending regular workouts cannot only improve fitness, but also reduce body fat and decrease blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

5 ways to get started with your health and fitness

Personal Better: 5 ways post

Let 2020 be the year that you achieve your goal!

If you don’t know where to begin or just want to ease yourself back in after the Christmas break we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you.

1. Begin with low impact exercises and beginners’ workouts

Swimming is the perfect activity when you’re starting out as there is no impact and you can set your own pace. If you want to use the gym you can build your knowledge and confidence with workout videos. Check out our YouTube playlist for workout inspiration. We would recommend the Beginners Workout demonstrated by Personal Trainer Ali. It is a strength workout that covers all muscle groups that you can adapt to what you want to focus on. If you’re new to the Technogym equipment don’t hesitate to ask one of our team on setting up and using the machines safely.

2. Balance is best

After a potentially indulgent December, it can be easy to believe that by being strict and restrictive you’re being healthy. If that is maintainable and works for you, great! However, for most of us, we struggle to maintain the discipline required so this year strike a balance. If you know you’re going out for a meal with friends in the evening just have a lighter lunch that day. If you want to cut back, cut back on snacking between meals. But the one thing you can do is diversify the food you eat. Dr Chatterjee recommends keeping an alphabet chart to help you eat a wide range of foods and if you want to try out some new recipes, we have some great ones, including a Roasted Vegetable Stew.

3. Discover what is going to get you motivated and moving

Exercise and activity shouldn’t feel like a hardship. You just need to find what you really enjoy doing. Over January just try different activities you think you might like. At The Edge you can try climbing, squash, Edge courses, including how to play racquetball, and exercise classes. Classes are perfect for beginners as the instructor will check your form, you’re motivated by everyone around you, and we have over 220 different ones, so you’ll definitely be able to discover what you enjoy doing. Download our class guide (PDF) to get started.

4. Join or exercise with a friend

Another reason why classes are fantastic is that each class is like a small community. November’s Members of the Month were nominated because of the support and enthusiasm they bring to each class. Also, starting your health and fitness journey with a likeminded friend is great for motivation and discipline.

5. Have an achievable goal you can work towards

Remember that this is a journey with a purpose. This purpose can range from ‘I want to be exercising three times a week’ to ‘By the end of 2020 I will be lifting 50kgs’. Whatever it is, what is crucial is that you give yourself a date to accomplish it by and that you make sure it is realistically achievable. Also try and track your progress. We have INBODY Technology that can do a full-body analysis that analyses more than just weight. If you don’t know where to start, why not book a PT consultation? Our experts can support you with planning and achieving your goal.

Facility closure: 10th January 2020

On Friday 10 January we will be closing our Sport & Physical Activity facilities (The Edge, Gryphon Sports Centre, Cromer Terrace and Sports Park Weetwood) between 9am-5pm.

The Edge will be open from 6:30am until 9am and from 5pm until 10:30pm.

The closure will allow us to undertake a number of important activities to improve the experience of our customers, which includes:

  • Training and development for our staff to help us maintain service delivery excellence.
  • Deep cleaning of a number of our facilities at The Edge, including changing rooms and circulation areas. To perform this type of cleaning we are required to close the facility and it is an important part of our cleaning programme.

We endeavour to keep facility closures to a minimum but we recognise the benefits of these important activities for our colleagues and customers.

To minimise disruption for our customers we have identified a quieter period to undertake these activities, and we hope you will still be able to join us at the available times for your workout.

Alternatively, if you would like a lunchtime workout on the 10th of January, we have arranged for a lunchtime circuit class to take place at our Cromer Terrace studio on the day.

This will take place at 12:00 – 13:00, Circuits, Cromer Terrace Studio and will be bookable as a normal class online and at reception.
