Brownlee Centre Festival of Running

Brownlee centre festival of running text with a pair of trainers

Entry for the event has now closed as all places have been filled.

Come join us on the 3 of March 2019 for a fun festival of running, for all ages and abilities, at our fantastic Brownlee Centre at the University of Leeds.

Our unique event takes place on our closed-road 1-mile cycle circuit and offers runners a multitude of different events to enter – from a 1 mile race all the way to 20 laps of our circuit in the 20 mile event. You can race and run where current and next generation Olympic champions train!

The Event

On the day, there will be music and performances to provide the fun festival atmosphere. There will also be a marketplace with food and drink available, as well as pop-up shops for all your running needs. The closed-road circuit provides a unique opportunity for those PB hunters and those preparing for a spring marathon.

The event also caters for those who wish to do something a little shorter with races at 5 and 10km. You can even take it steady with a 1-mile race and spend more time cheering on competitors and unwinding.

All finishers will receive a goody bag and a commemorative medal. There will be prizes in all distances, and hopefully a few PB’s to be found along the way!Cycle circut with brownlee centre building behind

The event will also support an international sports development programme, Gryphons Abroad – supported by the Bambisanani Partnership. A contribution from your race fee will go to the project which changes the lives of young people in South Africa, in particular through the purchase of bikes, bike equipment and educational materials.

The Edge wins ‘Education Facility of The Year’ at the National Fitness Awards 2018

We are proud to announce that Sport & Physical Activity, The Edge has won ‘Education Facility of The Year’ at the National Fitness Awards 2018.

The National Fitness Awards is an annual event which recognises excellence and achievement in gyms throughout the country. The Education Facility of the Year category is aimed at gyms which are based within a school or college or on a university campus.

The University of Leeds beat some stiff competition from six other shortlisted institutions including Coventry University and the University of Edinburgh

Shortlisted gyms have all been scored on being able to offer a  wide range of excellent facilities, with staff engaging with students, staff and the wider community; successfully spreading the positive word of health and fitness to the younger generation. Judges have shortlisted Sport & Physical Activity and scored The Edge highly based on the rage of equipment and group classes available, as well as how as a service we are able to support a range of sports clubs and elite athletes, and how The Edge facility enhances the experience of those living and working on campus.

Suzanne Glavin, Head of Sport & Physical Activity had to say …

“I’m delighted for the whole team who work tirelessly to provide a great experience for all our users. It’s especially pleasing that the award recognises not just the range of our facilities but how we engage students, staff and the community and how we are successfully spreading the word about health and fitness. This effort is in line with our new joint emerging plan “Do What Moves You” which will be published in January 2019″.

This fantastic achievement builds on The Edge being runner-up in the ‘Group Exercise Gym of the Year’ at the 2017 awards.

National Fitness Awards’ event director Judith Halkerston said:

“All our winners have had an arduous journey to this point – the standard of entries seems to just get stronger year on year and every facility that walked away with an award should be extremely proud”.

The Edge features again at the National Fitness Awards

Sport & Physical Activity, The Edge has been shortlisted for the fourth year in a row at the National Fitness Awards, this time in the category of Education Facility of the Year.

The National Fitness Awards is an annual event which recognises excellence and achievement in gyms throughout the country. The Education Facility of the Year category is aimed at gyms which are based within a school or college or on a university campus.

James Buckley, Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing Manager had to say …

The National Fitness awards are one of the most highly respected, independent and sought after awards in the Health and Fitness industry so to be shortlisted again, this time in the newly established Educational category is fantastic! The shortlisting panel were particularly impressed by our commitment to customer service excellence across the breadth of services on offer, and our integrated, inclusive, and collaborative approach to delivering Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing services as part of a whole-university approach of supporting students, staff and the wider community in becoming more Physically Active.

The final results will be announced this Friday 30 November at the awards ceremony held at The Athena in Leicester.

Changes to weekend lane swimming

The Edge

From Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September onwards there will be changes to our swimming pool timetable.

We have extended our Swimming Lesson Programme and this means that during the times below there will be no general swimming available:

  • Saturdays: 08:30 – 13:00
  • Sundays: 08:30 – 12:30

Early morning swimming is still available on both weekend days, across all eight swimming pool lanes 7:30 – 8:30

This change is due to reviewing  our health and safety procedures related to swimming pool lifeguard supervision. We feel that in order to improve the quality of our swimming lessons and ensure a safe environment for all, it is necessary to remove the general swimming at these times.

When preparing for this change we have reviewed the attendance of general swimming at these times, and found that according to headcounts and pay-as-you-go sales at reception, general demand for swimming at this time is very low, so we hope the change will have minimal impact to Edge members and visiting pay-as-you-go customers.

As a service improvement it means we have been able increase our Swimming Lesson Programme by a further sixteen sets of lessons, providing an additional one hundred and twenty eight customer places.

Swimming Pool Closure weekend 25/26 August

The Edge

Dear members,

On Friday 24th August at 11pm the nearby Generating Station Complex will be shut down for 24 hours to replace vital infrastructure. We are one of the users of this complex so unfortunately there will be a short impact to our service provision.

The impact will be:

  • No hot showers on Saturday 25th August across all The Edge changing rooms
  • Pool closed due to not being able to heat the water  on Saturday 25th August
  • Potential for colder than normal showers on Sunday 26th August
  • Pool to re-open on Sunday 26th at 15.00
  • There will be no ladies only gym session on Sunday 26th August so everyone can access the gym facilities while the pool is closed

For our Bank Holiday opening hours please click here.

We apologies for any inconvenience caused.

#LinktoLeedsGotEdgy

Leeds Squash

In June, five Link to Leeds student ambassadors participated in a fun-filled week of health and fitness activities, here at The Edge. Working in partnership with Link to Leeds, this project was an exciting opportunity not only for the ambassadors but also for the Sport and Physical Activity team. We wanted to show the international student community all that is on offer to them during the holidays; although the majority of students have left campus, many international students stay here in Leeds for the Summer.

Haleemah, Victor, Ahmad, Daniela and Melina experienced a variety of fitness activities including; personal training sessions, badminton, squashbasketball, football, Zumbaballet fit, P90x, spinbox fit, kung fu, climbing, body pumpbeginners yoga, and the use of the Technogym machines within our state-of-the-art fitness suite. It was a fun-filled, jam-packed week that gave the ambassadors the opportunity to experience everything that The Edge has to offer.

By the end of the week I was amazed by everything that The Edge has to offer. It’s really easy to access the classes, the facilities and get materials to play sports Melina Rodriguez.

Link to Leeds is fantastic University scheme that encourages international students to share their experiences, adventures and activities with prospect international students. Take a look at the Link to Leeds social media accounts; Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, which are filled with daily stories, videos and pictures that captured every moment of the ambassador’s energetic week. Read more about their experiences through their blogs on the Link to Leeds website.
