Never tried climbing before? Not sure if you will like it? Our hour taster sessions give you an insight into climbing. At the end of the session, if you wish to learn more and want to be able to use the wall unattended you can sign up to one of our learn to climb courses listed below.
Learn to climb
Our Learn to climb course is for beginners. You’ll complete four 90 minute sessions in consecutive weeks to take you through basic climbing techniques and the necessary ropework. At the end of the course you’ll be able to use the Edge Climbing Wall unattended. No equipment or experience is necessary but if you’re not sure what’s involved, just try a taster session.
NICAS Level 1 – 3
Age: 7 – 17
Dates: Thursday 4 January – Thursday 8 February
Times: Thursdays 5pm – 6:30pm
Dates: Saturday 6 January – Saturday 10 February
Times: Saturdays 10:30am – 12pm
The National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS) is an introduction to climbing. It provides a gateway to learning and developing a love for the sport. The key aim is to provide a safe introduction to climbing for children aged seven years and above. We use indoor climbing walls.
Skill development and progression can be easily monitored through use of our structured scheme.
We offer NICAS levels one through to three and courses are taught in six-week blocks. This includes a 1.5hr session each week.
If you are an experienced climber and have belayed before you will need to complete a Belay test before using the climbing wall.
The tests are 15 minutes and you will need to demonstrate that you can put on a climbing harness correctly, tie into a rope with an acceptable knot, and then belay someone safely up and down the wall, including arresting a fall. You just need to bring a partner (who need not have any climbing experience) who will do a short, easy climb while we observe you belaying them.
|Student / Staff
Once you’ve passed the belay test you will be able to use the climbing wall unsupervised.
Belay refresher session
If you have belayed before but would like to refresh your memory before committing to the test, then book a refresher session. As for the test, you will need a partner, and the session will last for the full 30 minutes.
