AJ Bell World Triathlon
Staff and students descended on Roundhay Park this month to participate in the AJ Bell World Triathlon Championship Series event. The University of Leeds was announced as the education partner for the event which takes place annually in Roundhay Park.
Athletes in action
Sport Scholar & Coach Scholar Jess Fullagar was victorious, taking the podium in the women’s Super Series event. It was a dominant display as the International Business student finished 83 seconds ahead of her competitors.
Jess Fullagar said: ‘After the last two years, I’m just trying to come back and there’s some strong athletes out there, so it gives me a little bit of confidence and reassurance that I am working hard and it’s starting pay off. It makes me look forward to the rest of the season as well.’
In addition, more Leeds Triathlon Centre athletes in action included Katie Rodda & Toby Nisbet who finished in 7th & 23rd place respectively. Anna McQueen took a silver medal in the sprint and Pierre Devimeux and Siu Ting Chung likewise placed 5th and 11th in the sprint event.
Volunteering
A team of 18 University of Leeds students and staff members volunteered as Tri-makers at the event. Our Tri-makers got involved in a variety of roles as anti-doping chaperones, route & crossing marshals, and on information and aid stations. Tri-makers, most importantly ensure competitors are safe and have a good experience. Our staff and students contributed 121 hours of their time during the course of the weekend. Thank you to everyone involved!
The University of Leeds has signed a three-year deal with the series as a result benefiting students through placement and volunteering opportunities. We will be assembling a volunteering team again for the 2024 event. Staff and students will be provided with information about volunteering in due course.
