We are currently operating under new guidelines due to covid-19, so that we can provide a safe and COVID-secure environment. Please click here to view more information and guidance about swimming lessons at this time. The below information outlines ‘business as normal’ operating of swimming lessons before covid-19.
How do swimmers enrol onto a course?
Please contact our aquatics team by completing an online enquiry form or call us on 0113 343 4881 for any further questions.
How is payment taken for lessons?
Payment can be made by cash or card by visiting The Edge reception team. Alternatively you can call reception on 0113 3435095.
How much do I pay using cash, card or cheque?
For both adult and children’s lessons the cost for a bundle of 12 lessons is £81. Bookings can be made at any time providing there’s space in the desired class.
How do swimmers gain access to The Edge facilities?
At the time of booking the swimmers information will be added to our registration system. This will allow the reception team to search for the swimmer on arrival for their lesson. At this point the reception team will give the swimmer a coloured wristband that corresponds to their teacher. The wristband must be worn throughout the lesson. The swimmer will then be allowed through to the changing area and then through to the pool hall in time for their lesson. You will need a refundable £1 in order to use a locker, alternatively locker tokens are available to purchase from reception.
What age can my child start swimming?
Children can be enrolled on to our swimming lessons from as young as the parents/guardians feel is appropriate for their child. We do ask that for children under 6 months, you have consulted with your GP and that your child has had the appropriate immunisations. Children aged 0-3 would be placed in an adult and child lesson called Swim-a-Song. Children aged 3-4 in a Duckling class and children aged 4+ would start in stage 1 of the Learn to Swim Framework.
Do parents get in the pool with the swimming lessons?
No. Parents are only asked to be in the water with their child if they are attending a Swim-a-Song class where parental assistance is compulsory. We are flexible with the Duckling classes as we realise at 3 years old some children may need additional support from their parents. This would only be on a short term basis.
What are the different stages of progression?
Please see Swim England’s Learn to Swim Framework which explains progression through the learn to swim pathway.
How long does each lesson last?
Are refunds given if a swimmer is ill and cannot attend?
We assess each case on individual merit, but for instances such as a cold or other general illnesses we do not offer refunds. We cannot offer a refund as all spaces on swimming lessons are reserved for each individual swimmer and so we are unable to re-sell spaces if a swimmer is ill. If a swimmer is ill for longer than a 3 week period and a doctor’s note can be provided then a refund for missed lessons will be made.
How quickly will swimmers progress?
Everyone develops skills at different rates, some swimmers may only take one block of lessons to move up a stage. Other swimmers may stay in the same stage for a number of terms.
Here at the Edge we are not teaching your children to simply pass the criteria for a badge. We are teaching them to swim competently, confidently and most importantly safely. This may mean that a child has to stay in a particular stage for a few terms.
If you have specific questions about your child’s progress then please feel free to email swimminglessons@leeds.ac.uk
How many swimmers are in the swimming lesson classes?
Our maximum class size in all swimming lessons is;
Can spectators sit on pool side?
All spectators are asked to sit in the cafe area overlooking the pool and are not permitted on the poolside. During children’s swimming lessons parents are asked to send their child through for their swimming lesson only 2 or 3 minutes before the start of their class. For younger children, the teacher will collect them from the entrance to the pool hall. Parents can walk their child around the pool side for them to wait for the start of the lesson but are not permitted to wait with the child on pool side. Children will be walked around the pool to meet parents at the pool hall entrance after the lesson.
