Varsity 2017

Leeds Varsity is the annual inter-university sports Varsity between arch rivals University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University.

This Varsity calendar kick starts in January and finishes with the October finale which see’s over 50 fixtures take place across 25 sports all in one day, culminating with the Rugby Union finale held at Headingley Stadium with over 15,500 students cheering on their respective university! A unique spectacle not to be missed.

The 2017 Leeds Varsity series finished with the Men’s Rugby Union finale on October 4th in which the University of Leeds team put in a sterling performance but were defeated by a physical, efficient Leeds Beckett side 29 – 8. Leeds Beckett were crowned overall champions for the 13th year running with a final nail-biting score of 32 – 29 making it another one of the closest varsities ever.

The 2017 series as it happened

  • University of Leeds 1-1 Leeds Beckett

    The Leeds Varsity series opener Cross Country, kick started our 2017 series in January whereby the University of Leeds women took the first point of the series but it was the Leeds Beckett men who were victorious taking the score to 1-1.

  • University of Leeds 1-2 Leeds Beckett

    Second in the series came American Football Varsity where we saw Leeds Becketter University dominate the fixture with an impressive 39-0 win.

  • University of Leeds 1-4 Leeds Beckett

    Next up came the T20 Cricket Varsity which saw our teams head up to Sports Park Weetwood for a battle against Beckett. Unfortunately, Leeds Beckett came up trumps again with victories in both fixtures.

  • University of Leeds 2-4 Leeds Beckett

    The final calendar event before our October finale saw the social leagues Varsity take place back in May. The two universities battled it out across a number of social sports with the University of Leeds dominating in the fixtures claiming the final varsity point before Octobers Finale.

  • University of Leeds 2-5 Leeds Beckett

    Varsity Netball, in to its second year, saw the Gryphon underdogs suffer defeat at the hands of league above Leeds Beckett, 29-38.

  • University of Leeds 2-7 Leeds Beckett

    Leeds Beckett Men & Women’s hockey first teams did the double this year at our first ever Hockey Varsity. Beckett men won 1-0 with a goal in the last five minutes from an impressive short corner routine. Despite a competitive game, Beckett women won 3-1 giving them the Varsity point.

  • University of Leeds 29.5 - 31.5 Leeds Beckett

    After a day of 52 fixtures played across both the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett campus’ the scores going in to the Rugby Union finale were 29.5 – 31.5 securing Beckett the win allowing them to keep their 13 years undefeated title (we drew one year which is why they don’t say 13 wins!).

  • University of Leeds 29.5 - 32.5 Leeds Beckett

    It was always going to be a tough finale for the Gryphons playing against a strong Leeds Beckett side who play in the league above. They held their own in the first half 3-6 but it was during the second half that Beckett pulled away putting on an impressive 29-8 score to reclaim the Varsity Rugby Winners title.

What next?

With the 2017 series now complete, it leaves the University of Leeds still chasing their first Varsity series Victory going in to 2018. Following the past two years incredibly close results, the Gryphon’s are keen to get that first title under their belt. Keep an eye out for information on the upcoming series, there’s plenty to get involved with.
