Did you take part in any activity before you signed up for the Get Out, Get Active programme?
Yes I did swimming, climbing, running and yoga.
How would you describe your relation to sport and activity?
Good but I definitely need support and encouragement as I get bored when I exercise on my own!
What attracted you to Get Out, Get Active?
I really enjoy doing activities with other people as it helps to encourage me. Get Out, Get Active fits in well with my studies. Being a student nurse can make it very difficult to get involved in classes that are at regular times each week because I don’t have a strict schedule. This means I can’t sign up to classes or pay in advance so I either miss out as they are fully booked or I miss out on deals where you pay for 8 and get 2 free, etc. I found that the cost of Get Out, Get Active sessions were extremely reasonable and the class sizes are often small so there has been no issues with me booking on a few days prior to the class. Furthermore, I don’t feel excluded from groups as the sessions often have some different people each week along with the regulars. This means I can make new friends and don’t feel anxious if I have missed a few sessions.
What was the first activity you tried with us and what was the most daunting thing?
I first tried kayaking and the most daunting thing was thinking I would not be able to do the activity at the same level as other people.
What do you enjoy most about the Get Out, Get Active sessions?
I have liked everyone I have met and have enjoyed every activity I have done as they are really well structured to suit all abilities. It has given me a sense of belonging and I have been more determined to try out more activities. I also enjoy that it fits around my course really well and there are plenty of things for me to try each week.
What has been your best experience so far?
Kayaking on the canal as I never thought I would have the confidence to do it.
What do you think are the biggest barriers to taking part in Get Out, Get Active and what would you say to people to overcome them?
I think it can be really daunting signing up to do an activity you have little experience of, however all of the sessions are really well structured to fit all abilities and everyone is so supportive. I have had such fun with every session, even if I haven’t managed to do well at all!
Thank you to everyone who is involved as it is fantastic!
