The climbing area includes a dedicated bouldering wall and several 8m high top-roping/leading walls, including slabs, overhangs, a chimney and a featured jamming crack. About 80 routes are available with grades ranging from 3 to 7a.
Would you like to use the climbing wall?
For beginners we have Taster Sessions and Learn to Climb courses - and for experienced climbers, a simple Belay Test. Once you have completed a beginner course or passed a belay test, you will be able to use the wall. All are bookable at The Edge Reception.
Come and try climbing with a qualified instructor to guide you. Sessions are free and last 30 minutes.
Three 90 minute sessions in consecutive weeks will take you through basic climbing techniques and the necessary ropework. If you’re not sure what’s involved, just book a free taster session first, or talk to the climbing wall staff.
Cost of the course:
£25 For Edge members,
£45 For non-members,
We ask you to demonstrate that you can put on a climbing harness correctly, tie into a rope with an acceptable knot, and then belay someone safely up and down the wall, including arresting a fall. You must bring a partner (who need not have any climbing experience) who will do a short, easy climb while we observe you belaying them. The test should last about 15 minutes and is free for any Edge membership, or £5 (student/staff), £5.50 (alumni/public) for non-members.
If you have belayed before but would like to refresh your memory before committing to the test, then book a refresher session. As for the test, you will need a partner, and the session will last for the full 30 minutes. It is free for any Edge membership, or £8 for non-members.
Partners in Climb
If you have passed your belay test or completed our Learn to Climb course but don't have anyone to climb with, Partners in Climb is for you. You can come along to the climbing wall between 7pm and 9pm on a Wednesday evening to be guaranteed a climb. Instructors will be available to help and advise if necessary.
