Our Facilities
When will the gym, pool and climbing wall reopen?
Our gym and swimming pool will be reopening on the 12th of April. From this time you will be able to visit the gym, pool or climbing wall. This will however be at reduced capacity and we will be allocating timed slots that you can book in order to help maintain social distancing.
All of our facilities will reopen in accordance with guidelines from the relevant authorities to provide a safe and planned COVID-secure environment, with staff trained to give the best possible experience.
We continue to incorporate advice and guidance from the relevant authorities in our planning including the NHS and Public Health England, industry associations, such as UKActive, and national governing bodies, such as UK Sport.
When will other indoor facilities reopen?
We are happy to welcome back all our student clubs for training, plus all our members back for racquet sports, including squash and badminton as of 17 May. Here is what you need to know before coming back to play with us:
- Both squash and badminton courts will be available to book once again.
- As this is classed as unorganised sport it will be subject to restrictions, meaning that members must adhere to indoor government rules of six people or two households.
- Please bring your own equipment, we are currently unable to offer any equipment for hire.
- Unfortunately, other sports such as basketball and indoor football will remain unavailable until further notice.
When will outdoor facilities reopen?
Outdoor facilities such as Sports Park Weetwood and The Bodington Centre will be opening on 29th March.
When will Cromer Terrace, Gryphon Sports Centre and Selside reopen?
Gryphon Sports Centre – Will not reopen in the 2020/21 academic year, we will provide more updates about this facility in the future.
Cromer Terrace – We will confirm closer to reopening the availability of Cromer Terrace for classes and activity bookings, any sessions available will be advertised on our booking system.
Selside Outdoor Centre – Whilst we are unable to confirm a date for reopening, we are working hard to safely reopen these facilities as soon as possible.
What will be the opening hours for The Edge?
From reopening on the 12th April, we will revert to our standard opening hours which will be 06:30-22:30 Mondays – Fridays and 07:30 – 21:00 Saturday & Sunday.
How do I book a gym/swim session?
You can book your gym or swim session the same way you would book an exercise class by visiting our booking page.

How long will my gym/swim session last?
As of 17 May, Swimming sessions and gym sessions will be for 60 minutes. This is to allow adequate time to keep all of our facilities clean and safe for use and to ensure availability for as many of our members as possible.
We ask that you please do not stay any longer than your allocated time.
What is the situation with car parking outside The Edge?
How will health and safety be ensured?
We will be allocating timed slots to use our facilities in order to allow for thorough cleaning of all equipment and facilities between use.
All of our staff will be equipped with visors and we will ask all of our members to wear face-coverings.
We will also make hand sanitiser readily available throughout the building.
Should I wear a face covering when coming to the facilities?
We are following the University guidance on face coverings, which must be worn in all indoor communal areas on campus, for example, main public corridors and communal toilets. Wearing a face covering is just one of the range of measures – including social distancing and frequent hand washing – that we should all take to help keep everyone safe. You may notice our colleagues not wearing face masks, this is because we are following the University guidance with regards to wearing face coverings whilst working on campus.
Should I wear gloves when coming to the facilities?
You do not need to wear gloves when visiting our facilities, we simply ask you to use the hand sanitising stations provided and to regularly wash your hands.
What showers will be available to use?
All changing rooms and showers will be available to use from the 17 May onward. However, we encourage members to arrive “Gym Ready” and to only use these facilities if necessary. The capacity in these areas shall be limited, with some sections closed off.

Will The Edge return to the one way system?
Yes, the Edge will initially be returning to the one-way system to help ensure social distancing and certain areas will remain closed off for the time being.
Please be observant of all sign-posting during your visit.
When will The Edge return to operating as normal?
Although we hope to be returning to normal on June 22nd, this will be subject to governmental guidance. We will continue to update our members at the earliest possible opportunity.

Existing Memberships
How long can I freeze my membership for?
You are currently able to freeze your Edge membership up until the end of June. Please be aware that after this date, your membership will resume as normal.

My membership is frozen but I would like to return to use the facilities
If you would like to unfreeze your membership, please send an email to edgemembershipservices@leeds.ac.uk and we will be happy to assist.
Do I need to request an extension for my annual membership?
We will be automatically extending all annual memberships for the period that we were closed. You do not need to request this. To discuss this further, please contact edgemembershipservices@leeds.ac.uk
My annual membership expired whilst you were closed, what do I need to do?
If your membership was due to expire during a closure related to Covid, your membership will automatically be extended and will still be available for you to use upon reopening. If you would like to enquire about your membership please email edgemembershipservices@leeds.ac.uk
What will happen to my Halls membership?
If you are still living in university halls, you will still retain your halls membership. However, your membership will still end with your accommodation contract and we will not be able to extend this.
I have a Halls upgrade, will this be extended?
Unfortunately, we are not able to extend Halls memberships as these are dictated by your university accommodation contracts. If you purchased a halls membership upgrade to premium and would like to discuss your options with us, please get in contact with edgemembershipservices@leeds.ac.uk.

Joining The Edge
Which memberships are available to purchase?
All of our varied membership options including Student, Staff, Public, Alumni and NHS are now available to purchase.

Are membership prices remaining the same?
All membership prices will remain the same with the exception of Halls upgrades to premium which can now be purchased for £70.
Can I arrange a tour of your facilities?
You certainly can! You can book a show-around of The Edge in person by contacting edgemembership@leeds.ac.uk or explore The Edge virtually via our Virtual 360 Tour and email with any questions you may have.
Get Out, Get Active
Will Get Out, Get Active be available this academic year?
We are working hard to provide a programme of activities but we remain guided by the University and government guidelines. The safety of our students and staff is our priority and we will continue to update the latest information on this website.
Personal Training & Classes
Will Personal Training be available upon reopening?
Yes, Personal Training will be available from the point of reopening. To arrange a session please visit our Personal Training webpage. Select your desired PT and click the contact icon.
How can I book a PT session?

How will Personal Training be different?
Personal Training will be delivered in accordance with social distancing rules and must be arranged in advance with a PT. Availability may be affected by usage.
I already have personal training credits, can I still use these now or in the future if I’m not ready to return yet?
You can keep these for the foreseeable future. The expiry date of packs will be reset following our re-in-statement of regular opening times.
Will exercise classes be available?
Our indoor classes are back! Below are a few things you need to know about the return to indoor classes:
- We will be running a full timetable of indoor classes and shall still be running a handful of outdoor and online classes.
- For indoor classes, social distancing shall remain in place with each member exercising in a 3m x 3m allocated space.
- Please bring your own towel and water bottles, drinking from the water fountains will not be permitted.
- Please wipe down any mats or equipment used during the class with the cleaning supplies provided.
Please follow the one-way systems which shall be clearly signposted.

How do I book an exercise class?
You will be able to book your face-to-face exercise class (as well as your gym or swim sessions) by visiting our booking page and selecting the class you wish to attend from the drop-down menu.

Will The Edge continue to offer live online classes?
Yes, we will still be offering live, virtual classes. However there is likely to be changes to our timetable following reopening in order to accommodate classes at The Edge.
Will The Edge continue to provide virtual, on-demand content?
Our Your Home, Your Move hub certainly isn’t going anywhere and we will continue to create new on-demand content following reopening.

Swimming lessons
Will swimming lessons be returning?
We shall start phasing back swimming lessons once The Edge reopens on 12 April. We will initially be prioritising existing customers. If you are an existing swimming lessons customer, a member of the aquatics team shall be in touch shortly to confirm dates and times.

Will previous credits still be valid?
Yes, any previously purchased credits will have been frozen over lockdown and will still be valid to use after reopening.
Climbing
Will climbing sessions be returning?
Yes, climbing will be available from the 12th of April to all existing signed-off climbers including members and pay-as-you-go customers.
How do I book climbing?
You can book your 3 hour session by emailing edgereception@leeds.ac.uk or phoning 01133 435 095.
Will I need my own equipment?
Yes, unfortunately you will not initially be able to hire out equipment until restrictions are loosened.
How will sessions be different?
Sessions can have a maximum of 6 attendees and are broken up into 3 slots. Each slot will allow 1 or 2 climbers on the wall at a time.
Will hand-sanitiser be available?
Yes we will be providing hand-sanitiser for all climbers.
