Your child’s learn to swim journey begins in our children’s classes suggested from four months old and continues through to Ducklings, Stage One up until the completion of Stage Seven. Taught by Swim England Level 2 or equivalent swimming teachers who are DBS checked.

Our adult lessons are available for anyone 16 years and above and are designed to suit everyone from beginners that want to gain confidence to swimmers that want to brush up on techniques and improve distance.
- We offer a ladies only session on a Tuesday

Are you looking for an intensive swimming course as a more affordable alternative to weekly lessons?
Our adult and children swimming lesson crash courses are the perfect way for beginners and improvers to gain continuous practise over over four to five days during school holidays.
There are four stages (four to seven) to target stroke technique specifically.

Junior swim club is aimed at children that have completed our learn to swim pathway, stages one – stage seven.
We are not an affiliated swimming club but cover the stage eight – 10 criteria. Sessions are focused on improving distance, fitness, starts and turns.

Children’s swimming lessons
At The Edge we offer a fantastic range of quality children’s swimming lessons throughout the year.
Our children’s swimming lessons follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework. The programme is delivered by Swim England Level 2 qualified swimming teachers, and covers the basics fundamentals, through to gaining complete confidence in the water.
What do we offer?
- Maximum 10 adults with children for adult & child classes
- Maximum 6 children in our Ducklings class
- Maximum 8 children per class in our stage 1 and above courses
- Lessons take place on Saturday and Sunday morning throughout the year and above
Adult and child classes
Our adult and child classes are for children four months – three years old.
These lessons are a fantastic way to introduce your child to swimming, focusing on water confidence, bonding and basic movements skills through song and rhyme. An adult must accompany baby/toddler in the water.
Ducklings
Duckling classes are for children three – four years old. These classes are designed to help develop water confidence and learn how to travel independently through games-based activities.
This class is taught by a teacher in the water.
Assessments are needed for stages one to stage seven including stage one+ /stage two+
Stage one
During this stage swimmers learn how to safely enter the water, travel five metres on their front and back and rhythmically put their face in the water to blow bubbles. They learn how to star float, push and glide and they demonstrate an understanding for pool rules with or without floatation equipment or support.
Stage one+ / Stage two+
Stage one and two+ is for beginners ages eight – 15 years old.
During this stage swimmers learn how to safely enter the water, travel five metres on their front and back and rhythmically put their face in the water to blow bubbles. They learn how to star float, push and glide and they demonstrate an understanding for pool rules with or without floatation equipment or support.
Stage two
During this stage children learn how to jump in safely in the deep end and develop other safe entries. They learn how to rotate with log rolls and tuck rotates as well as refining skills learnt in stage one without flotation equipment or support.
Stage three
During this stage children continue to develop streamline body position, submersion with jumping and submersion to collect objects. By the end of stage three children will be able to swim 10 metres on front and back with arms over the water. Rotations are continued and water safety themes are continued.
Stage four
During this stage children develop buoyancy and how to perform a sequence of changing shapes and sculling is introduced. Children refine kicking techniques for all four strokes over 10 metres to develop a strong core body positions and continue to maintain their 10-metre swim with arms over the water.
Stage five
During this stage children develop vital water safety skills through sculling, treading water and demonstrating how to get help. By the end of stage five children can swim 10 metres of each stroke to the correct standard.
Stage six
During this stage children learn more lifesaving skills, how to ‘shout and signal’ for help and swim in clothes. Children develop their distance to swim 25m of each stroke to the correct standard with rhythmical breathing.
Stage seven
During this stage children continue to swim 25 metres of all four strokes to the expected standard. They will increase their distance up to 100 metres and will develop their treading water and diving skills.
Adult swimming lessons
Whether you’re a nervous or confident swimmer, our fantastic range of adult swimming lessons are designed to suit everyone.
Our adult swimming lesson programme follows the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework. The programme is delivered by Swim England qualified Level 2 swimming teachers.
What do we offer?
- Lessons take place throughout the week including evenings
- Tuesday Ladies only lessons are in a closed environment with a female instructor
How much do our adult lessons cost?
Lessons must be purchased via card in consecutive blocks of 12. See our swimming price list, which are the same for both Edge members and non members.
Who are the adult swimming lessons suitable for?
Our adult programme is suitable for swimmers aged 16 with a guardian or parent present and over.
When do lessons take place?
Our adult lessons run throughout the year. For further information regarding dates, times & costs please contact The Edge swimming lessons directly.
Be water confident
This class is about gaining the confidence to enter the pool safely. You will achieve basic core aquatic skills; entries, exits, buoyancy, balance and aquatic breathing. With an outcome of 10 metres basic front crawl and backstroke and gaining confidence in deep water.
Assessments are required for the following classes:
- Be a swimmer
This class is about developing core skill and introducing new skills such as sitting dives, forward rolls and Butterfly kick. Deep end confidence and swimming distances are increased up to 50 metres. - Be a better swimmer
This class is about developing strokes, distances and increased time performing skills. Distances will develop up to 100 metres with the use of all four strokes. - Be a master swimmer
This class will enable you to swim up to 400 metres and include specific turnaround times, lane etiquette and putting together your own sets. This class requires an assessment, and the minimum entry is 100 metres front crawl and backstroke.

SWIMTAG smart tech
SWIMTAG is a smart swimming‑tracking system designed to make swimming more motivating, sociable, and data‑rich.
It uses a wristband or your own wearable to automatically record detailed swim metrics, giving you powerful insights into your performance and progress.
How to get started:
- Ask at reception to use a SWIMTAG band and begin tracking every inch of your swim
- You can sync it to your smartphone and get all your results, from stroke to distance.
- It’s easy to use and included in your membership! There are monthly challenges and you can compete against other swimmers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do swimmers gain access to The Edge facilities?
Swimmers gain access by using their personally allocated swipe card. This must be brought every lesson in order to gain access to the facility.
Do you have a sauna and steam room?
Yes, these are available whilst the pool is open for access.
How much is it to swim?
£7.75 for a non-member, £6.75 for students. This allows you access to the pool for 90 minutes.
What’s your swimming costume policy?
- No underwear is to be worn underneath the costume.
- Tight or close fitting Lycra over or under swimsuit.
- Must be appropriate (not too revealing).
- Lycra or Polyester only. Designed for swimming.
Can spectators sit on pool side?
Spectators are permitted to sit in the reception area of The Edge facility, unless an arrangement has been made prior to the lesson with Aquatic lead teacher.
Can I swim lanes during every session?
Yes, there are lanes available during both lane and general swim sessions.
Is there ladies-only swimming?
Yes, we offer Ladies on sessions on a Tuesday 10:15-11:45 & Friday 21:15-22:15
Can my child go swimming?
Yes, children can use our pool but must be with a parent/guardian in line with our child admission policy. Children under the age of 8 years old must be supervised on a 1:2 ratio (1 adult to 2 children)
Do you run swimming lessons at the Edge?

How quickly will swimmers progress?
All swimmers progress at different speeds. If swimmers have access to swimming outside of lessons, we find progression occurs at an accelerated rate.
The most important factor is that everyone learns to swim and enjoys learning to swim.
Are refunds given if a swimmer is ill and cannot attend?
Lessons can be re-credited if proof of illness is produced e.g. Doctors Note. Lessons missed due to illness such as common cold, cannot be.
How can I help my child to improve?
What should I expect from each lesson?
Junior swimming lessons follow a 12-week scheme of work which is posted on HomePortal weekly.
Relevant criteria for that week’s scheme of work are assessed and updated with a date and time stamp. All assessment outcomes reflect what the teacher observes during the lesson on that specific day.
Can I speak to my child’s swimming instructor about their progress?
Unfortunately, our instructors are very busy before, during and after lessons. Please check on your child’s progress via HomePortal.
Do parents need to stay on site during the lesson?
Yes, parents or guardians must remain on site for the duration of the lesson.
Can I photograph my child during their lesson?
No, photography and filming aren’t allowed in or around the swimming pool or changing areas.
How long should my child stay in lessons?
Swimming is a vital life skill, just like reading or writing. It’s important for children to stay in lessons until they become confident and capable swimmers. Swim England recommends completing up to stage seven to build a strong foundation for lifelong enjoyment and safety in the water.
