Everyone has heard of Belly Dance or belly dancers, but have you ever taken the time to think about what it really is? Debated as being one of the oldest forms of dance; when mastered it is a powerful, sensual art form that has its roots in North Africa and the Middle East but is now taught and loved all over the world. A fantastic form of exercise which concentrates on isolating different parts of the body, and depending on the style, emphasises the fluiditity of the moves.
You don’t have to have a dancer’s background to start belly dance, although Egyptian belly dance does borrow moves from ballet and some other classical styles, belly dance is its own genre of dance and is taught as so.
We’re a Belly Dance club with classes for complete beginners, improvers and advanced. So whether you have never tried it before and want to give it a go, or you have done belly dance before and wish to continue, we’re the society for you.
Taught by professional instructor Meilyn, you’ll not only learn belly dance from one of the best, but you’ll have the opportunity to perform in union based shows and shows all over Leeds. Check out our youtube channel here

After being established in 2009, we have gone from strength to strength as a bhangra society and team. Within just a few years, we have managed to win national talent competitions such as Mehfil in 2010 and 2014 and the Riley Award for the Best New Society. On top of this, we also competed at Capital Bhangra in 2012.
We provide weekly bhangra workshops which are free for members with a small fee for non-members along with a social at least once a month. We are also a competitive bhangra team and run trials for members who wish to join the team and perform at events all year round. Along with learning a new, energetic dance form, you will also get a great workout during the workshops.
Come along, meet new people and give it a go on the 15th October in the Treehouse from 18:30 to 20:30. The session is completely free, including food and drinks. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to work up a sweat!

Scottish Dance

Scottish Country Dance is a fun traditional social dance from Scotland (not to be confused with highland dancing which is done solo).
Usually 3 to 4 couples dance in a set (technical lingo for organised formation) typically in two lines (1 line of men and 1 line of women) facing each other.
The dance itself is made up of a few basic steps and patterns that you will get shown step by step. The dances range from slow and thoughtful strathspreys (very Scottish word) to fast, bouncy, exhausting jigs! But no matter what the speed is each new dance will get walked through many times before the music starts (Phew!).
No auditions required, it can be taught to anybody, no matter how tangled your feet get dancing usually.
No need to bring a partner, we always change partners around so everyone gets to dance with one another. All we ask is you wear comfy clothes and flat shoes, and bring a drink of water (or juice) with you. You can start any week in term.

Originating in Harlem New York, swing not only refers to that toe tapping rhythm within many forms of Jazz music, but is also a term given to a collection of the most fantastic partner and solo dances including the Lindy Hop and the Charleston. The vibrance of the jazz and swing era of the 1920’s to 40’s continues to exist in Leeds, the UK and beyond within the ever expanding network of swing dance enthusiasts who promote its revival.
Our weekly classes are relaxed and cater for every level throughout the year, so there is no need to worry about starting midterm. They will give you the foundations to take onto the social dance floor and once confident enough there may even be opportunities for the brave to impress with jaw dropping aerials.
In addition, weekly events for social dancing run by the society and the greater swing community provide a multitude of possibilities for meeting and dancing with an extraordinary range of swing dance fanatics.

Vertical Fitness is a revolutionary way to exercise whilst having fun! In one workout we combine flexibility, strength and balance, all based around the aerial art of pole dance. Our classes are designed to build your self-confidence and make you feel good about yourself, whilst getting fit and meeting new people.
We aim to change the stereotypical ideas that pole dancing normally brings to mind, to reveal its new identity of aerial gymnastics. Pole art needs to be recognised for the sheer power, skill and talent involved to perform such elegant moves so effortlessly.
