OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The city of Leeds will be hosting an exciting new event in 2023; the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon, in support of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and the Rob Burrow Centre for MND. The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon will see over 10,000 participants take on a challenging route across north Leeds, starting and finishing at Headingley Stadium. The route will also take participants right through the heart of our campus as well as the suburbs and scenic countryside.
Leeds Sport will be supporting this event and hosting a water station for participants in Hyde Park. This will involve handing out water to participants on the route as well as cheering and providing much needed support for people taking on this amazing challenge. Volunteers are a welcome sight for many runners as they clock up the miles and our water station will be a welcome respite. Volunteering at a major event is fun and rewarding and you’ll have the opportunity to volunteer alongside fellow members of the University of Leeds community. The event takes place on Sunday 14th May 2023 and our shift will run from 7.25-11.30am.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Commit to support the full shift with set up starting at 7.25am and clear up finishing at approximately 11.30am.
- Help set up our water station on Woodhouse Lane and pack down at the end ensuring all litter is collected and disposed of appropriately
- Ensure the water station is kept tidy and well stocked during the course of the event
- Support all runners from first to last, handing out water and providing words of motivation and support
- Represent the University & Leeds Sport in a positive manner
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
You do not need any previous experience of running marathons or event-based volunteering, just energy and enthusiasm! The role is simple and does not require any specialist skills or knowledge. Full, on the job training will be provided and volunteers will never be asked to do anything outside of their level of experience or comfort zone. Volunteering at the event should be fun so relax and enjoy yourself!
SKILLS DEVELOPED
Communication, Team Working, Leadership, Flexibility, Event management
TRAINING & SUPPORT
There will be an e-briefing document sent to all volunteers ahead of their deployment. You’ll then also receive some on the job training at the start of your shift to ensure you know what you are doing and answer any questions you may have. You will be supported throughout your volunteering by the water station manager and Leeds Sport staff members will also be in attendance on the day to get involved and support our staff and students.
REWARD & RECOGNITION
Volunteers are an important part of the success of the event and all Leeds Sport Marathon volunteers will be eligible for the following:
- Refreshments on the day
- The opportunity to represent the University of Leeds at a large regional event supporting the local community and charities
COMMITMENT
Ideally you will be able to commit to the following shift:
- Sunday 14th May – 7.25-11.30am
If you are likely to find this commitment difficult, please speak to the Sports Volunteering Officer who will be able to discuss this in more detail.
