04 January 2021: Facility Closures due to National Lockdown
Following the government’s announcement of further restrictions it plans to introduce throughout England from tomorrow, 5 January, it is with regret that we shall temporarily close all of our facilities for general use until further notice in line with government instruction.
Our priority remains to protect the safety, health and wellbeing of our staff and customers. On reopening we will continue to provide a COVID-secure environment and to deliver the best possible experience. We will continue to update you about our reopening at sport.leeds.ac.uk/reopening
Since reopening in December, we have been delighted to see so many of our community return and to have been able to help you to keep active, which we believe is so important for our health and wellbeing. We want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this difficult period and for your continued support.
We want to help keep you active during the closure period, so we will provide a wide variety of online activity for you to get involved in, including live streamed exercise classes, Get Out Get Active classes and Health & Wellbeing activity.
Which facilities are closing?
All our University of Leeds Sport & Physical Activity facilities will temporarily close from tomorrow, 5 January, until further notice. These include The Edge, Cromer Terrace, Sports Park Weetwood, Bodington Playing Fields (including the Brownlee Centre), and Selside Outdoor Centre.
What will happen to my Edge membership?
We’ve loved seeing our members come back and use the facilities since December and tried to provide the best possible experience possible in a safe and COVID-secure environment. We’ve outlined for each membership type below what will happen to your membership, and we want to make it as easy as possible for you as we appreciate it is a difficult time for everyone.
All monthly memberships and payments will be frozen for the time that we are closed. If you have already made a payment for January, this will be waived from a future membership payment. Annual memberships will be frozen and extended for the weeks that we are closed. If you would like to discuss your membership, please get in contact with edgemembershipservices@leeds.ac.uk.
What will happen to swimming lessons?
Our swimming lessons programme will not start as scheduled on the 15 January due to the closure. Your credits will carry over until we reopen and we are able to recommence our swimming lessons programme. We will be in touch closer to reopening to let you know about an expected restart of the programme.
What will happen to my course or booking?
Sessions already paid, including swimming lessons and personal training, will carry over until re-opening and any block booking payments will not be taken during this time. We will be in touch once these are able to recommence.
I am part of a LEED module, will I still be able to attend planned face-to-face sessions?
Following government guidance, all LEED modules shall now be delivered online. Your tutor will be in touch with you to discuss this.
Can elite sport still continue to take place?
In their latest guidance, the government has confirmed ‘elite’ athletes (for example, athletes on elite development pathways) are able to continue sporting activities. We will get in touch with all relevant groups regarding this and the potential use of our facilities.
Please make sure to look after yourselves and your loved ones during this difficult time and please keep checking sport.leeds.ac.uk/coronavirus for further updates.
15 December 2020: Membership Freezing Update
We are now providing the option to freeze your membership until the end of April 2021.
- To request to continue freezing your membership please visit sport.leeds.ac.uk/freezing.
- If you have already requested to freeze up until the end of January but wish to extend this, you will need to resubmit a request to freeze.
08 December 2020: The Edge Reopening Update
We hope everyone is keeping safe and well and looking forward to Christmas. We’re busy planning our reopening and we’re looking forward to seeing you all back training with us at The Edge soon.
As you are aware, The Edge has been used as an asymptomatic COVID student testing centre in order to support the University with helping students to travel home safely in time for Christmas. The testing is due to come to an end on Wednesday 9 December, and we originally planned to reopen the facility on Friday 11 December. We have since made the decision to reopen on Monday 14 December. This is to ensure that our staff have enough time to ensure the facility is ready for members’ return. This includes removing and dismantling equipment required for the testing centre such as booths, barriers and PPE. In addition, our staff will be conducting a deep clean of the facility and reinstating all the correct COVID signage around the building.
In preparation for re-opening, we’ve provided some information below so you know what to expect upon your return.

Membership update
We can now confirm how our delayed reopening, whilst we have been supporting the University to facilitate COVID testing for our students prior to the Christmas break, will impact your membership.
Annual members – For our annual members we will still extend your membership by the number of days that we have been closed. If your membership was due to expire in our closed period, we will add the days that you were not able to use due to our closure onto your membership to begin when we reopen.
Monthly Members – We will waive the December payment for monthly members as payment for November has already been taken. If your membership has been active (unfrozen) since 1 November, we will also waive 50% off your January membership fee due to the closure continuing into mid-December. If for any reason your payment for November was unsuccessful you will be notified by email and we will require this to be made when we reopen. If you paid for November, but have frozen your membership for December, we will waive your first month back. E.g. if you paid in November, but have frozen for December and January, we will waive your February payment.
If you would like to discuss your membership arrangements, please get in touch with us at edgemembershipservices@leeds.ac.uk.

Before the closure, the Aquatics Team started contacting customers to book in new lesson times. The team will continue to get in contact with people once the facility re-opens on 11 December.
Should you have any questions in the mean time, please send them through to swimminglessons@leeds.ac.uk.
18 November 2020: Update on facilities reopening
We hope everyone is keeping safe and well during this second national lockdown. We’re busy planning our reopening and we’re looking forward to seeing you all back training with us at The Edge soon.

To support the University with this, the Edge will be used fully as a testing centre, with no access for any sporting activity from 30 November until 9 December.
