Our volunteer of the month for October is Leeds Sport Media Assistant, Lili Dixon. Lili works alongside the marketing team helping to create content, edit videos, take photography and much more!
Which volunteering programme are you on & what does your role involve?
I am on the Leeds Sport Media Assistant programme. This role is varied and can include all kinds of media related tasks such as taking photographs, editing videos, creating content for the social media platforms and so on.
How much time do you commit to volunteering per week and how do you manage this alongside your studies?
I usually volunteer a couple of hours a week although this can differ depending on what projects are taking place. The programme is flexible and so is easily managed with your studies.
What made you want to volunteer?
I am hoping to have a career in the media industry and having played sport growing up I thought the programme was a perfect combination of the two worlds I love. I really wanted to delve into sports photography and gain some new skills in this area. I was excited to be working in a team, meeting new people and encouraging people to participate in sport.
What is the best thing about volunteering?
It gives you an avenue to present your creative work. The diverse projects allow you to enhance skills in all areas of media and really helps improve your confidence. I also love being in the sports world, being able to watch and capture the action is such good fun!
What are the challenges?
Having the confidence to trust your ability.
Would you recommend volunteering to others?
Yes, 100%. Even though I have only been in the role for one month I am loving it. It is great being able to showcase sports teams in action, broaden the awareness of sport and hopefully encourage more people to take up a new sport. Leeds Sport offers so many different volunteer programmes that I’m sure there’s one out there for everyone.
How does it feel to win Volunteer of the Month?
A really lovely surprise! Thank you so much
“Lili has been incredibly helpful in her new role as a media assistant, and she has only been with us for a month! She has helped create and capture a lot of content, always of great quality, and she is always really happy to help with anything we need. Well done Lili!” – Emily Halsall, Marketing Executive.
