International Student Exercise Classes Success

This Christmas, the University of Leeds flagship fitness facility – The Edge, offered a unique series of free exercise classes for its international students and the wider Leeds Global Community.

The classes included the ever popular, Les Mills Body Pump and Body Combat along with some brand new virtual led classes taught in Mandarin. The University of Leeds has invested significantly in their Group Exercise Timetable providing one of the largest programmes in the country, with over 220 classes on offer per week during term time.

Suzanne Glavin (Head of Sport) said; “It’s really important that we make sure that our sport and group exercise class provision at the University of Leeds meets all our students’ needs, including our international students. We were grateful and delighted to capitalise upon our strong collaborative working with Les Mills. We were delighted that we could pilot their excellent virtual classes, and be the first to launch those taught in Mandarin. Our international Chinese students who remained in Leeds over the Christmas period enjoyed a taste of home through taking part in Mandarin virtual group exercise classes“.

The Edge now has a fully kitted out virtual studio, offering a range of virtual classes for both beginners and the more experienced exercise class goer.

155 class bookings were made over the two weeks of Christmas for this new venture and feedback received from the students was resoundingly positive.

 

I think it’s a really brilliant idea to put these classes during December, especially for international students. I really enjoyed the class, there were loads of weights and bars available which was good. I would definitely attend again! Thanks for putting them on!” – Miranda

I attended two virtual classes and they were very good, especially that the instructions were in Mandarin. I enjoyed them and realised that I really need more exercises. I’d like to book again if similar classes will be available in the future” – Huiming 

The Edge has been recognised at the National  Fitness Awards over three consecutive years, coming runner-up in the National Group Exercise Award category in 2017.

 

Fitness Courses are Back!

Our popular fitness courses are back at The Edge!  Led by our team of expert Personal Trainers these courses will increase your motivation and enhance your fitness results. The courses are just £60 for a 6 week course and there are plenty of options to choose from so whatever your fitness level there’s something for you!

All courses will take place in a reserved area of the new weights training area opposite the gym reception.

The courses:

Courses start week commencing 8th of February 2016 and cost £60 for a 6 week course of fitness training. Non-members will also need to pay an additional £7.50 Fitness Suite entrance fee per visit. There are a range of dates and times available. The courses have a maximum group size of 6, with a minimum of 2 needed to run the course.

Women only & Unisex Strength Training Courses

These courses are both aimed at beginners, and are aimed at educating and coaching, but the instructor will always seek to make the class challenging. There is no difference between unisex and women only courses in terms of content.

Olympic Lifting Courses

“Aimed at weightlifters who may be interested in how to Olympic lift like the professionals. Learning these new lifts will certainly enhance your athletic performance”.

Merel, Jen and Fran all recently completed one of the Women Only Strength Training courses.

Workout of the Month

Gym

Start getting fit for summer with Personal Trainer Steven Patchett and his ‘Marine Challenge’ circuit workout.

 

The Marine Challenge

This is a workout that is designed around the Royal Marine Commandos’ selection tests, so it will definitely put you through your paces! It is a circuit based workout, meaning you go straight from one exercise to the other. For example you would finish the treadmill and go straight into your pull ups and so on until you complete all of the exercises. It’s a high intensity workout that will definitely make you sweat, the idea is to complete it in the fastest time possible and then try and improve your time on your next go!

If you would like to give this a go, but you’re unsure of any of the exercises, feel free to speak to any of the Health and Fitness Team.

Warm up

Rowing machine – 5 minutes

Main session

2.4 kilometre treadmill 
10 underhand grip pull ups (assisted if needed)
40 abdominal crunches 
40 marine press ups (hands underneath the shoulders, elbows in, close to the body) 
20 burpees 
800m row on the rowing machine

Warm down

Upright bike – 5 minutes
Full body stretches
